If you’ve got a sofa bed, chances are it’s not the most popular bed in your house or apartment. Keep in mind that the total mattress height is only 4.5″. We use what is known in the industry as “HD” foam for the bottom later, which is short for “high density”, as it is an extruded synthetic foam, but very dense, (known as 1830 HD foam, similar to the same material used in a high quality first class seat on an airliner). This layer has to hold up over time, resist compression, but still offer support and yielding, especially for side sleepers, and those needing pressure point reduction. We use this foam but it is a high quality, upper echelon commercial grade material – the best.

Then, you need a cushier layer up top, something that yields and breathes, has a supportive buoyant feel, but will withstand the constant folded state that a sofa bed mattress must endure, and still be able to spring into action when unfurled and ready to use. The ONLY material that meets these requirements is botanically derived natural latex rubber. The top inch of our sofa bed mattress is 100 percent Dunlop latex rubber. The outer cover is made using a cotton/poly blended material which is impregnated with natural aloe vera oil to give it a very nice, smooth finish. This makes it highly durable, and less resistant to coarseness, drying out, and seam failure at all sewn edges.

On the underside of the aloe vera cotton material is a thin layer of New Zealand wool vissle (densely woven, like felt), used as the mechanical fire barrier, and offering additional cushiness and softness to the mattress. The wool helps the mattress ventilate and wicks away moisture while folded up as well. The end result is a toxin free mattress with extraordinary comfort and durability that rivals any conventional mattress we’ve seen.
